Auxiliary verbs

What is an auxiliary? What is its usage? Why is it so important to clarify a tense of any statement we speak and utter?

Why?

To elucidate the auxiliary verbs, it is to be known firstly that they are function words - words that function in any type of sentence we utter. It is actually a type of closed class which is composed of words having a grammatical function as opposed to content words, which are lexical words of an open class. In summarize, an auxiliary verb is used to add functional or grammatical content to the information defined by another verb which is considered to be the main verb. Auxiliary verbs are also called helping verbs.

There are twenty three auxiliary verbs.
1. do
2. does
3. did
4. has
5. have
6. had
7. is
8. am
9. are
10. was
11. were
12. be
13. being
14. been
15. may
16. must
17. might
18. should
19. could
20. would
21. shall
22. will
23. can

Some of the examples are:
1. I am writing a book.
2. He has done the work.
3. We will be there in a minute.
4. Would you help me with this homework?
5. Can you open the door?
6. Did you visit New York last holiday.
7. Do you like chocolate?
8. They must get there on time.




Now, lets move to the modal verbs. What're actually MODAL VERBS?

Modal Verbs

A modal verb is a helping verb or an auxiliary that expresses necessity or possibility in a sentence.

There are 9 modal verbs:
1. Will
2. Shall
3. Would
4. Should 
5. Must
6. Can
7. Could
8. May
9. Might
Remember, we use only present form of verb after modals... Only present form.

Some of the examples are:
1. I shall write a book.
2. He will do the work.
3. We would be there in a minute.
4. Should you help me with this homework?
5. You must open the door.
6. Can you visit New York last holiday?
7. Could you eat with me tonight?
8. You may like chocolate.
9. They might get there on time.




Now, lets move to the perfect modal verbs. What're actually PERFECT MODAL VERBS?

Perfect Modal Verbs

A perfect modal verb is also a helping verb or an auxiliary that expresses the same nature - necessity or possibility in a sentence.

There are 9 perfect modal verbs:
1. Will have
2. Shall have 
3. Would have 
4. Should have 
5. Must have 
6. Can have 
7. Could have
8. May have
9. Might have 

Remember, we use only past-participle form of verb after perfect modals... Only past-participle.

Some of the examples are:
1. I shall have written a book.
2. He will have done the work.
3. We would have been there lately.
4. Should you have helped me with this homework?
5. You must have opened the door.
6. Can you have visited New York last holiday?
7. Could you have eaten with me tonight?
8. You may have liked chocolate.
9. They might have got there on time.
